Turkey: sick prisoner who does not receive cancer treatment

Although suffering from cancer, Hüseyin Durmaz is deprived of treatment in the Kiriklar prison in Turkey. A situation denounced by human rights organizations.

The Istanbul branch of the Human Rights Association (IHD) hosted a press conference on Monday organized by a platform fighting for the release of sick prisoners. The purpose of the conference was to denounce the situation of the seriously ill prisoner Hüseyin Durmaz, detained in the Kırıklar prison, a town located in the western province of Çanakkale, in Turkey.

Fatma Yıldırım, a member of the struggle platform, read a letter sent by Durmaz in which the political prisoner talks about his determination to overcome the disease, despite the difficult conditions. Durmaz’s sister Şerife Taşkın, meanwhile, stressed the need for her brother to take the supplements outside the home.

“No possibility of treatment in prison”

Durmaz’s lawyer, Seher Dursun, said he asked for a postponement of the execution of the sentence soon after being diagnosed with cancer. However, he added, the judge of the sentence has not yet ruled. Stressing that Durmaz could not be treated in prison, the lawyer asked for solidarity with the sick inmates.

Muhammet Serve from the platform said: “In order for Huseyin to cope with this difficult disease, he must be treated in a safe and clean environment so as to prevent complications. However, the conditions cannot be met in prison. For this he must be released. as soon as possible”.
