Turkey. Earthquake. Footage from the moment the building collapsed

Thick dust filling the streets, the roar and the block turning to rubble. Such a picture was captured by one of the witnesses of the dramatic incident that took place in Izmir, Turkey. As a result of the earthquake that hit the Aegean region on Friday, at least a few buildings were destroyed throughout the province. Authorities report deaths and many injured.

According to the US geological survey USGS (United States Geological Survey), the earthquake that hit the Aegean coast on Friday was magnitude 7, and according to the Turkish disaster and emergency agency AFAD – 6.6.

“At this stage we have received information that six buildings have collapsed in Bornova and Bayrakli,” in the province of Izmir, said Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu on Twitter. Environment Minister Murat Kurum reported five collapsed buildings and several people under the rubble.

The Reuters Agency, citing witnesses, said that at the time of the earthquake, people had fled into the streets of Izmir on the Turkish Aegean coast.

One of the recordings captures the moment of a collapse of one of the two-story apartment buildings in the center of Izmir. You can hear the roar of a falling block. Moments later, the surrounding streets are filled with dense dust.

The Turkish AFAD agency, quoted by Reuters, said at least four people had lost their lives and 120 were injured as a result of the shocks across the country.

Two people are also known to have lost their lives on the Greek island of Samos. Emergency services officials, quoted by Reuters, reported two unconscious people found on the island. It turned out that teenagers, a girl and a boy, were killed when a wall collapsed in Vathy as a result of the quake. A spokesman for the Greek police also said that some old buildings on the island had been damaged, including the church in the port of Karlovas.

The earthquake on the Aegean coast

The shocks were felt along the Turkish Aegean coast and in the Marmara Sea area. Ali Yerlikaya, the governor of Istanbul where the earthquake was also making itself felt, said no damage had been reported so far.

The inhabitants of the Greek island of Samos – about 45,000 people – have been called to stay off the coast. There were “minitsunami” and material damages – informs the AFP agency.
