Ankara wants Paris to apologize for “false” accusations regarding the recent naval incident in the Mediterranean.
–
This Thursday (2), the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mevlut Cavusoglu, said that his country expects an apology from France after an incident between Turkish and French vessels in the Mediterranean Sea, informs the Reuters agency.
Paris requested that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) initiate an investigation into what happened. This Wednesday (1st), the France announced that it would suspend its participation in the Sea Guardian naval operation in the Mediterranean, according to a letter from France’s permanent representative to the Alliance, Muriel Domenach, to NATO Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg.
The relationship between the two NATO members has deteriorated after disagreements over the conflict in Libya. Paris accuses Istanbul of aggressive behavior after a Turkish warship attempted to inspect a French vessel in June, which Ankara suspected was violating the UN arms embargo on Libya.
