Tunisia: “Lemhaffat” by Hechmi Ati, as part of “Sahriyet Summer 2020” In Hammamet – A subtle and intelligent work

The audience of “Sahriyet summer 2020” in Hammamet was at the rendezvous with the theater on Tuesday August 18, with “Lemhaffat”, a theatrical piece by Hechmi Ati, produced by the Center for scenic and dramatic arts of Sfax.

On a stage with a minimalist decor where two characters, wearing masks, indulge in a fishing trip on the banks of a river while exchanging a few words with a Sfaxien accent, the piece opens with jazz tunes, by taking the viewer on board in another spatio-temporal dimension to the presidential palace with all its nobility, then a house for the elderly with its old chairs and its neglected garden which reflect the decay of the two old characters.

Directed by Hechmi Ati and interpreted by a group of young actors, including Lazhar Bouaziz, Saïda Hammi, Amor Ben Soltana and Jamila Khenfir, this work attempts to analyze the relationships that govern the world of politics with humor and derision …

This vaudeville-style play is a social criticism that denounces the elite, through the character “Lemhaf” who suddenly sees himself elected to the presidency to which he clung despite all the disputes. But this character ends up being debunked by his own son, by means of an unexpected stratagem, to find himself interned in an asylum for the elderly. This play, both light and deep, is a delicate but successful exercise in theatrical style.
