Tug of war for Huawei top woman continues in Canadian courtroom NOW

Canada said almost a year ago that it would agree with the extradition of Huawei senior Meng Wanzhou to the US. But the court had to approve that, the first phase of that case has begun.

Meng, besides being a financial top woman also the daughter of the founder of the Chinese telecom group, is suspected in the US of fraud and circumvention of sanctions against Iran. Canada arrested her as early as December 2018 at the request of the US.

According to connoisseurs of the – often slow – Canadian legal system, it can take years for the judge to reach a final judgment. 47-year-old Meng can freely await the outcome of the case; the daughter of the billionaire behind Huawei was released on bail.

In court she argues her case by stating, among other things, that what she is suspected of in the US is not punishable in Canada. The moment the Canadian authorities gave the green light for the extradition of the top woman, Canada had no sanctions against Iran. The first phase of the lawsuit takes four days. The defense will speak at the end of April.

A second part, which is mainly about the procedures that Canada has followed in the arrest of the Huawei top woman, starts in June. The final phase of the case is now planned for the end of September, beginning of October.
