The government of the Republic of Suriname has announced that it hopes to be able to provide information tomorrow, Tuesday 31 March 2020, when stranded passengers can return home from Cuba, Miami and the Netherlands. The aim is to have everyone at home before Easter (April 12).

Lt. Col. Danielle Veira, Director of National Security, has said that the government is currently preparing to have its nationals on Surinamese soil before Easter.

“I ask to remain on standby. You may need to be at the airport within 24 hours. Continue to follow the COVID-19 website. Stay in touch with our consulates. Keep following the messages, ”said the security woman.

The repatriates are brought in under the supervision of the Surinamese government, or in government quarantine. She calls on Surinamese citizens abroad to stay indoors as much as possible and not to take to the streets unnecessarily.

Anyone who returns to Suriname – regardless of where the people come – will be placed in government facility for a fortnight. Everyone goes to places that have been chosen by the government and sanctioned by Public Health, according to Veira.

On all flights where returnees are and have to return to Suriname, two doctors travel with them. The doctors will check all passengers for flu and fever symptoms before the flight.

Furthermore, the doctors and staff on board the aircraft are provided with Personal Protective Equipments (PPE). The returnees all receive a mask during the flight.
