Trump wants back on Facebook & Instagram

President Donald Trump was banned from Facebook and Twitter after his supporters stormed the US Capitol. His Twitter account has already been activated again, and Facebook could now follow.

the essentials in brief

  • Ex-US President Trump has been blocked on Facebook since his supporters stormed the Capitol.

  • Trump’s lawyer is now demanding that the Facebook account be activated.

  • The Vice President of the Facebook group Meta, Clegg, indicates a quick decision.

Donald Trump swears by the online platform he founded, Truth Social. He is not even currently active on his Twitter account, which has been activated again. The demand from the former US President for the activation of his Facebook account is all the more surprising. Trump’s lawyer Scott Gast writes in a letter to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg that has become public:

Trump wants back on Facebook

“The suspension of President Trump’s Facebook account has dramatically distorted and impeded public discourse.” Republicans should not be “silenced”. “Donald J. Trump is a declared candidate for the office of US President,” Gast said. “In numerous opinion polls, he is the leading contender for the Republican nomination. In other polls, President Trump beats several leading Democrats in an electoral duel, including President (Joe) Biden and Vice President (Kamala) Harris.”

If it is up to Gast, a meeting with the management of the Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta should take place. A “quick” recovery of Trump’s Facebook account is to be discussed.

Meta Vice hints at Trump’s return

In fact, unlocking Trump’s account is getting closer. The Vice President of the Facebook parent company Meta, Nick Clegg, indicated this on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The decision will be announced soon. Clegg pointed out that Trump was only banned for two years. He also emphasized that Meta has an obligation to allow controversial discussions on its platforms.

Meta suspended Trump following his comments on the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 and the subsequent debate about the role of the president-elect in the riot. Trump had already allowed Twitter back in November after US billionaire Elon Musk took over the social network.
