Trump probably before returning to Twitter, Facebook and Insta · Dlf Nova

There are increasing signs that ex-US President and presidential candidate Donald Trump is about to make his social media comeback in 2024. The change in mood apparently comes from himself on the one hand, but also from the platforms.

Twitter was the first to do so, back in November. Donald Trump’s ban was lifted after Elon Musk took over. The account is visible again, including all tweets from the ex-president. His last tweet is from January 8, 2021 – after which the Republican was blocked on Twitter.

“The last Trump tweet was dated January 8, 2021, two days after the Capitol was stormed.”

Trump’s old posts are still being liked and retweeted: The number of likes and retweets in the penultimate Trump tweet, for example, in which he thanks his 75 million voters, is increasing almost every second. Likewise with the tweet in which he announced that he would not be going to Joe Biden’s inauguration. Trump has 87.7 million followers on Twitter. However, they have not yet been supplied with new content. The ex-president has so far ignored his former mouthpiece.

Trump back on Facebook soon?

Donald Trump has not yet regained his Facebook presence. A decision on the release was actually planned for January 7th, but then the whole thing took even longer. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Meta’s chief lobbyist Nick Clegg now hinted at thoughthat Trump could possibly reappear on Facebook soon.

“It will soon be announced that Trump can return to Facebook,” Meta chief lobbyist Nick Clegg hinted in Davos.

On Tuesday (January 17, 2023), Trump’s lawyer formally asked Meta boss Zuckerberg to Unblock account on Facebook. The lockdown radically distorts and limits public debate. It’s about a “real dialogue” and not about silencing a presidential candidate.

The official statement from Meta is still pending. A working group with employees from the Public Policy, Communications and Content Policy teams is discussing the issue. The timing for now pending decision is not surprising given that Trump’s Facebook and Insta bans were imposed for two years after the storming of the Capitol. And that deadline is now over.

Facebook wants to allow controversial discussions

But has anything changed about the reasons for the ban? Many observers and experts say no. Donald Trump has contributed to the radicalization of the masses via social media – and he may do so again in the future. But Meta’s chief lobbyist Nick Clegg made it clear in Davos that Facebook is now of the opinion that controversial discussions should be allowed. Means: Facebook wants or has to endure Trump on the platform.

Another point: Facebook should have no interest in being branded as agents of the Democratic Party. Democrats have repeatedly called for an extension of Trump’s ban. The question of how much power over public discourse should be left to platform bosses is a legitimate question, our network reporter thinks. At the latest from the Revelations by the Twitter files It is known how much pressure has been increased from politics and government agencies on the platforms to ban certain accounts and opinions.

Whether Trump needs Twitter and Facebook

Donald Trump wants to become US President again in 2024. He only has around 4.6 million followers on his own platform Truth Social – and thus a much smaller reach than on Facebook, Insta or Twitter. Besides, there was always Reports of technical and financial difficulties from Truth Social.

“She [Facebook und Instagram, Anm.d.Red.] need us more than we need them.”

Donald Trump, former US President, on Fox News

Across from Fox News Trump has now said his campaign organization is currently negotiating a return to Facebook and Insta. “We’ll talk to them and we’ll see how it all goes,” he is quoted as saying, “If they take us back it would help them a lot and that’s fine with me. But they need us more than we need them to need.”

and NBC News anonymously quotes two Trump confidants who claim that Trump has been looking for input for tweets for weeks and that his campaign team already has initial ideas. So the comeback on Twitter is probably only a matter of time – and on Facebook it’s a question of ending the ban.
