Five dogs tested positive for covid-19 in Mexico and showed mild symptoms after having contact with people who were infected, the Ministry of Agriculture reported this Thursday.

A statement details that the first infections, two dogs that lived together, were identified on April 27 and the result of the fifth was known this Thursday. Four animals are from the capital and another from the neighboring State of Mexico.

The authorities also assured that “no mutations were identified in the virus genome that represent a risk of species jump “and that at the moment there is no scientific evidence that shows that dogs and cats can transmit the virus to humans.

The secretariat warned last April of the possibility that companion animals could be infected with the new coronavirus and issued a series of recommendations to both pet owners and veterinarians to prevent or identify a possible case.

“To date there have been 25 notifications for suspicion of the disease: 16 in dogs, seven in cats, one in a zoo tiger and another in a whose”, adds the text.

One of the best-known cases of coronavirus in animals happened at the Bronx Zoo in New York, where a Malayan tigress tested positive for the virus, possibly infected by an asymptomatic keeper.
