Trump asks judge to order Twitter to restore his account

Former US President Donald Trump has asked a federal judge in Florida to order Twitter to restore his account, which the company terminated in January after the fatal assault on the US Capitol.

Trump’s attorneys filed the motion in federal court in Miami seeking a preliminary injunction against Twitter and its CEO Jack Dorsey.

Twitter, by censoring Trump, infringed on his First Amendment rights, the attorneys said, according to the motion.

Twitter declined to comment Saturday on the measure requested by Trump.

The company permanently expelled Trump from its platform days after supporters of the then president violently invaded the Capitol to prevent Congress from certifying the presidential victory of Joe Biden.

Twitter argued that it was concerned that Trump could incite more violence. Before his account was terminated, Trump had an estimated 89 million followers on Twitter.

Trump also had his Facebook and YouTube accounts closed due to similar concerns that he could incite violence.

Facebook suspended Trump’s profile for two years until January 7, 2023, and will then review the measure. YouTube banned the former president indefinitely.

In July, Trump filed lawsuits against the three companies and their CEOs in federal court for the southern district of Florida, claiming that he and other conservative politicians were unjustifiably censored.

The motion for a preliminary order was filed as part of Trump’s case against Twitter.
