Trump announces he will ban TikTok in the United States

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he would ban TikTok from the United States, suspected by Washington of being able to be used by Chinese intelligence. The social network belongs to the Chinese group ByteDance.

While aboard the presidential plane Air Force One, Mr. Trump told reporters he would act on Saturday.

With nearly a billion users worldwide, the TikTok social network is very popular with a young audience thanks to its format allowing the distribution of short music videos.

CFIUS investigation

It is the subject of an investigation by CFIUS, the US agency responsible for ensuring that foreign investments do not pose a risk to national security.

Steven Mnuchin, the US Secretary of the Treasury, said Wednesday he would make a “recommendation” on TikTok to the White House this week.

The social network has often had to defend itself from its links with China, where ByteDance has a similar application, under another name. He has always denied sharing data with Chinese authorities.
