Tropical Storm Laura is born with winds of 45 miles per hour and will pass tomorrow near Puerto Rico

He National Hurricane Center (NHC, in English) reported this morning that Tropical Storm Laura, formerly Tropical Depression 13, formed.

A hurricane hunting plane found that the system has winds of 45 miles per hour and is at latitude 17.0 degrees North with longitude 59.8 degrees West.

Also, The plane found that the system’s center of circulation is further south than predicted, so the trajectory would be adjusted closer to Puerto Rico in the next report.

He National Meteorological Service (SNM) in San Juan warned that, regardless of whether the storm passes near or far from the island will leave between three and six inches of precipitation over Puerto Rico, so the island is under flood watch until Saturday at 8:00 p.m.

The meteorologist Gabriel Lojero, from the SNM, urged citizens not to look at the storm as a single point on the map, since the system has a fairly wide field of rains that will affect the island from hours of the night today.

“This system has remained disorganized. And it is due to two factors, the first is that the translational speed of the system is more than 20 miles per hour and another factor is the moderate shear winds. That has not allowed this system to be strengthened. But no matter the distance it passes, it is a very wide system and we will receive a lot of rain “explained the expert.

In the 8:00 am bulletin, the NHC reported that the system could pass near or north of Puerto Rico as a weak tropical storm.

“The strongest storm winds are expected to remain north of the area over the Atlantic, but as it is disorganized it is possible that the center of the system will reorganize and be closer to the island”Lojero warned.

The last trajectory of the depression adjusted a little closer to Puerto Rico in the 5:00 am bulletin, compared to yesterday. However, the newsletter of 11:00 am today could have new changes, so the meteorologist urged the public to pay close attention and review their emergency plans.

“We saw how the floods were with (tropical storm) Isaías. So it is important that people prepare in areas vulnerable to floods, “she said.
