Triple Rainbows and the Happiness Index: A Rare Sight Captured on Waglan Island

The weather camera on Waglan Island captured three rainbows and the happiness index soared three times

In recent days, Hong Kong has a high rate of rainbows appearing when it is sunny or rainy, and facebook has been washed out by rainbows or even double rainbows from time to time. Under Rainbow Daping, the observatory’s weather camera on Waglan Island recently captured a rare sight of three rainbows. If seeing a rainbow is good luck and happiness, then seeing three rainbows will triple the luck and happiness index.(The following is a detailed introduction to the mysterious country of Henglan Island↓↓↓↓).

The Hong Kong Observatory deconstructs the formation mechanisms of different rainbows and looks at them one by one + Netizens responded with surprises↓↓↓↓

The Observatory uploaded a photo of the Waglan Island weather camera on its facebook page on June 28, pointing out that the camera captured three rainbows consisting of a main rainbow, a secondary rainbow, and a reflection rainbow.

Netizens who responded were very excited, saying “the rare three rainbows are so beautiful”, “so beautiful, thank you for sharing, let the people of Hong Kong see the colorful and bright rainbow!” No four rainbows?”

The three rainbows have different arrangements of light and dark colors

The three rainbows are different in light, darkness and color arrangement. The Observatory once deconstructed the formation mechanism of different rainbows in the episode “Several Rainbows” of “Cool Meteorological Knowledge”.

According to the Observatory, sunlight is composed of light of different colors. When there are water droplets in the atmosphere, the light will be refracted and reflected again, thus forming a rainbow. Since the wavelength of purple light is shorter, the refraction range is larger than that of other colors. The innermost color of the rainbow is usually purple, and the outermost color is red. In order to see a rainbow, the atmosphere needs sufficient water droplets, so most rainbows appear when it is sunny and rainy, or in places with a lot of water vapor such as waterfalls.

If the light is reflected twice by the water droplets, a neon will be produced, which is what many people call a “double rainbow”. The order of the colors of the neon is just opposite to that of the “main rainbow”. Since light will lose some energy every time it is reflected, the brightness of the neon will be weaker than that of the “main rainbow”. If a double rainbow appears, and a reflective rainbow is reflected on the sea surface, then the spectacle of three rainbows appearing at the same time may appear in front of you, and its color arrangement will be the same as that of the “main rainbow”.

Waglan Island is located in the southeast waters of Hong Kong

Waglan Island is located in the southeast waters of Hong Kong and is the easternmost island of the Po Toi Islands. According to online information, Henglan Island is across the sea from Dangan Island under the jurisdiction of Zhuhai City. There is a lighthouse on the island – “Wenglan Lighthouse” and the weather monitoring station of the Observatory. In 2018, the Observatory’s facebook uploaded a short video introducing Waglan Island in detail——
