Tributo de Luces pays tribute to fallen towers in NYC – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – At sunset Saturday, two vertical beams of brilliant blue light shot upward through the darkened New York City sky, evoking the Twin Towers in an annual tribute visible for miles.

The public art installation “Tribute in Light”Or Tribute of Lights first shone six months after the September 11 attacks and has been repeated on every anniversary since then, with the twin columns rising four miles into the sky from dusk to dawn.

The beams are made up of 88 xenon bulbs, each rated at 7,000 watts, placed in two 48-foot squares on the roof of a parking lot south of the September 11 Memorial. They can be seen from a 60 mile radius.

The 9/11 Memorial & Museum presents the exhibit to honor those who were killed and celebrate the spirit of the city.

For the 20th anniversary, New York buildings also planned to illuminate their facades and rooftops in blue.
