Triathlon: Ironman Hawaii postponed to 2021

With the Ironman in Hawaii, another major sporting event falls victim to the corona crisis this year. As the organizers announced on Thursday evening, the World Endurance Championship must be postponed for the first time in its history.

The competition planned for October 10 is now to be rescheduled on February 6, 2021. In the coming year, the title fights are to take place twice for the first time since 1982, because the next regular race date on October 9, 2021 is also to be recorded.

The decision was made primarily because of the current problems with qualifications and the current international border and travel restrictions in Hawaii, the organizer said in a joint statement with the local authorities. This makes it “difficult to host and hold competitive world championships”.

Lange is looking forward to the double World Cup

The decision causes mixed reactions among the German stars of the scene. “The relocation is a shame, but it makes sense and there is now planning security for all athletes. Now we finally have concrete new goals and I am looking forward to two World Championships in 2021,” said two-time Ironman winner Patrick Lange SPORT1.

The three-time Ironman world champion Jan Frodeno sees the two-time staging of the World Cup in the coming year as a “challenge”, which he wants to master in the best possible way. “Having top form in February and October is possible, and you can also get the preparation done,” Frodeno told SID: “As an athlete, you enjoy clear goals, without which you cannot motivate yourself.”

The move was not a surprise for Frodeno. However, he is now asking the organizers to modify the qualification process. “It’s impossible to be in top shape two more times within twelve months,” said Frodeno, who warned, “otherwise it won’t have any healthy consequences.”
