He finally had his moment in the middle of the third quarter: In his Kansas City Chiefs’ clear 41:10 win against the Chicago Bears, star tight end Travis Kelce had to wait a long time for his touchdown catch. But when he was finally able to pluck a pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes out of the air in the end zone, the cameras didn’t stay on him for long.
The TV stations preferred to focus on the stands, or more precisely the box area. Because there, singer Taylor Swift, a world star, was celebrating the touchdown she had just scored. Kelce caught a total of more than 1,400 yards of space (a record for a tight end) and a total of eleven touchdowns.
Kelce gives up a lot of money
A season earlier, Kelce and his Chiefs had secured the first Super Bowl title in team history. A success that they were able to repeat last season. With over 1,000 yards again and a new personal touchdown record (12), Kelce played a decisive role in winning the title again.
In total, Kelce has gained almost 10,000 yards of space in his career, a whopping 71 touchdowns and holds several NFL records for his position. Despite his success, Kelce earns relatively little money compared to other players. Kelce will earn a total of $12.3 million this season. Although he is the best player at his position from an athletic perspective, he is only fourth among tight ends in the NFL in terms of finances.
“My agents love to tell me I’m underpaid,” Kelce told Vanity Fair. He could probably fetch double or triple his current salary in negotiations with other teams. “If I really put my mind to it, I could probably easily get what I’m worth, in quotes,” he said. But Kelce has other priorities: “It’s all fun until you end up somewhere where you don’t win. I prefer winning. That’s why I love the situation I’m in.”
