Travel Providers Still Misleading Consumers with Hidden Costs: Consumers’ Association

Travel providers are still guilty of misleading offers by omitting mandatory costs. For example, none of the travel offers examined at Prijsvrij, KLM Holidays and Expedia correspond to the actual costs, reports the Consumers Association.

A year ago, the Consumers’ Association came out with similar conclusions. In 83 percent of cases, the holiday could not be booked for the offer price. Two-thirds of the 250 offers examined are now incorrect.

These are promotional prices with increasing costs added when the booking is actually made. “For example, the VakantieDiscounter advertises a trip to New York including mandatory costs, while consumers still have to pay 39 euros per night to the hotel on the spot,” the Consumers’ Association writes. Mandatory cleaning costs, hotel service costs and reservation costs are also concealed.

Of the ten travel providers surveyed, Prijsvrij (D-reizen), KLM Holidays, Transavia Holidays and Expedia took the crown. None of the offers from these companies were correct. ANWB Reizen, Sunweb and Corendon most often showed offer prices that did correspond to the actual costs of a holiday.

According to the Consumers’ Association, hidden costs must be included or stated in the offer price. These are “legal rules” that travel providers do not adhere to. The association says it will go to court to summon the providers. “Travelers must be able to count on the fact that travel offers are correct,” says Consumers’ Association director Sandra Molenaar.
