Travel advice for Sweden tightened, Norway steps up border security | NOW

The travel advice for Sweden has been adjusted to orange on Tuesday evening, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Twitter. The advice is now to travel to Sweden only if necessary.

Sweden is known worldwide for its relatively loose approach to the corona pandemic, but the number of infections is currently rising sharply. Daily records were made several times in the past two weeks. Since Friday, 15,779 positive tests have been added, compared to 10,177 a week earlier.

“Call it a second wave or not, we are in the middle of an outbreak and we all need to help contain the virus,” Sara Byfors of the Swedish health authority said Tuesday.

Sweden tightened up measures in three additional regions on Tuesday. Citizens in 13 of the 21 regions are now advised to work from home, avoid public transport and minimize social interaction with those outside of their own family.

Nationally, 75 new hospital admissions have been added since Friday. The hospitals in the capital Stockholm, in particular, are under pressure due to the resurgence of the virus. The test capacity is reaching its limit in large cities, which means that the number of tests has to be limited in some places. The number of deaths in Sweden has increased by 35 to 6,057 since Friday.

Norway is tightening up border security

Sweden generally fares better than many major European countries when it comes to the number of deaths per capita. Compared to the surrounding Scandinavian countries, however, things are much worse; For example, the number of deaths per capita in Sweden is ten times higher than in Norway, where there was a lockdown in the spring.

Norway decided to tighten up security along the border with Sweden on Monday, just like during the first wave in the spring. For that, it enlisted the help of the military, because there are not enough civilian authorities to guard Europe’s longest border. About 80,000 Swedes live and work in Norway.
