Transavia’s first repatriation flight from Morocco landed at Schiphol at around 1.30 am last night. A spokesperson said there were about 100 passengers on the plane.
As of last Thursday, Morocco banned all flights to and from the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom. The Moroccan authorities are afraid that the increasing number of corona infections in these countries will spread to the North African country.
Transavia received permission on Friday to carry out ten repatriation flights. Nine flights to the Netherlands are now planned until October 29.
Empty planes
Last week, approximately 3,500 people traveled to Morocco with Transavia. Since the announcement of the flight ban, there has been a lot of uncertainty about what it meant for Dutch travelers who had gone to the North African country.
Transavia had to wait for days for a permit to pick up stranded passengers with empty planes. The airline has announced that the ten flights are probably not enough to bring everyone who wants to return to the Netherlands.
On Friday evening, a flight from Morocco also landed in Brussels with 78 Dutch people on board. They are brought to the Netherlands by bus from the Belgian capital. These travelers had gone to Morocco through travel agency TUI.
