The market for apprenticeship places is stable, according to trends observed in the cantons by the Task Force “Apprenticeship Perspectives 2020”. Almost 66,000 contracts were signed across Switzerland until the end of July, a decrease of 1% over one year.
However, the number of contracts concluded for the start of the 2020 academic year in the cantons of Vaud, Geneva and Ticino has so far been significantly lower than that of the previous year at the same time. This difference is due to the fact that the recruitment phase, which takes place later in French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino, coincided with the confinement, explains Tuesday the State Secretariat for Training, Research and Innovation (SERI ).
The delay observed during the months of April to June was however made up somewhat. At the end of July, the conclusions of apprenticeship contracts in these cantons represented in volume approximately 90% of that of the contracts signed at the end of July 2019. It is still possible to conclude apprenticeship contracts for the start of the 2020 school year, recalls by elsewhere the SERI.
In German-speaking Switzerland, the apprenticeship market has not undergone major changes. The number of contracts concluded until the end of July was even higher than in 2019 in some cantons.
Still 12,000 vacant places
As of July 30, there were still 12,622 vacant apprenticeship places for the start of the 2020 school year on the orientation.ch portal, where the cantons officially publish the available places. On average, around 700,000 consultations are recorded each month on the portal.
During the period March-April, the number of consultations fell by around 408,000 compared to the same period of 2019, which corresponds to a decrease of 29%. On the other hand, an increase of 321,000 consultations was observed between June and July. The decline linked to confinement thus largely offset.
Businesses play the game
Regarding people completing their apprenticeship, the first valid lessons are expected at the end of August. Despite a less favorable economic context, many companies have kept people in training after their apprenticeship or have hired them afterwards, says SERI.

Regarding the start of the 2021 school year, it will take a few months for most of the apprenticeship places to be published and for an estimate to be given, further notes SERI.
