“Training adapted to student profiles”

Carine Bernault

Can you introduce us to the new University of Nantes, as it has existed since January 1, 2022?

Convinced of the need to join forces to better meet together the challenges of the contemporary world, the University of Nantes, Centrale Nantes, the University Hospital of Nantes, Inserm, the School of Fine Arts, the School of architecture and the IRT Jules Verne have joined forces to create Nantes University. This new establishment allows us to revisit the links between players in higher education, research and innovation in Nantes territory. Nantes University was designed as a responsible establishment, open to the world.

What are the objectives and advantages of this new group?

Nantes University is the only university in France created with a university hospital, an IRT, a national research organization (Inserm) and major schools as full members. This diversity is, of course, one of our major assets, which will enable us to strengthen the areas of excellence in Nantes research. The objective of Nantes University is therefore indeed the concentration of forces to ensure a qualitative higher education and to create the conditions for the success and development of students. Nantes University is also a member of European University EUniWellwhich contributes to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

What opportunities for students?

New courses, including double degrees, will gradually enrich our training offer. For example, we are going to open the dual engineering/architect curriculum – already in place between the National School of Architecture and Centrale Nantes – to students from Polytech Nantes. Nantes University will also facilitate bridges between courses and in particular the possibility for L2 science students to join the Centrale Nantes engineering study cycle. Students wishing to complete their training will also be able to follow dual training as doctor/engineer, pharmacist/engineer, architect/engineer. For example, a medical student can, during his training, join Centrale Nantes to become an engineer and a doctor. We also want to facilitate access to masters of the Humanities and Societies poles students of schools of architecture or fine arts; or even allow a bachelor’s student to follow a module at Centrale Nantes. One example among many others… Our ambition is to offer, in Nantes, further studies adapted to the profile of each student and to contemporary challenges!
