Train traffic nationwide flat, NS expects to restart from 7 p.m

The telephony failure that shut down train traffic throughout the Netherlands at the end of the afternoon has been resolved, say ProRail and NS. No communication was possible between ProRail traffic control and the drivers in the trains. Train traffic was therefore stopped for safety reasons to prevent accidents.

NS says that starting train traffic throughout the evening could lead to problems, because the trains are now not where they should be. The carrier says there will be no trains until at least 7 p.m.

Standstill

A spokesperson for NS says that the trains have been brought to a controlled stop at the next station. Trains from other carriers such as Breng or Arriva were also affected by the failure.

End of May ProRail also had to deal with problems in the telephone system. The problems were then caused by a malfunction in the GSM-R network.
