Train in Aalst overcrowded: students wait in freezing cold for a replacement bus

Many students were literally left out in the cold on the first day of school of the new year. The train that was supposed to take them to Aalst was apparently not designed for more passengers and many travelers had to wait in the cold on Monday for replacement transport.

Spokesperson Bart Crols of train company NMBS confirms the problems of Monday morning and also regrets them. ‘The train in question did indeed run in the short composition, so with two carriages instead of four, but we did have a bus as back-up.’

‘At the Erpe-Mere stop, the problem arose that the train was overcrowded, so that even the supervisor could no longer reach it and that was of course no longer safe, also taking into account the corona measures in force. At that time, we had to ask passengers to get off the bus and wait on the platform for the bus, which is obviously not fun,” said the NMBS spokesperson.

Crols wants to apologize on behalf of the railway company for the incident. “We will do whatever is necessary to resolve this issue as soon as possible,” he said. The NMBS spokesperson cannot yet confirm whether that will be the case today, Monday.
