Tragic Incident at Tokaimura Nuclear Power Plant: The Story of Hisashi Ouchi’s Radiation Exposure

Jakarta

Hisashi Ouchi caught radiation equivalent good atom. He also experienced the most torturous 83 days before the unfortunate incident took his life. The incident hit him on September 30, 1999 at the Tokaimura Nuclear Power Plant (PLTN).

At that time, Hisashi Ouchi is one of the technicians working at the facility operated by JCO, in Tokai, Ibaraki Prefecture. During the incident, he was working with two other colleagues Masato Shinohara and Yutaka Yokokawa to fill the settling tank.

written History of Yesterday, the three men prepared some fuel for the experimental reactor, Joyo. Ouchi was the closest person to the settling tank, while Shinohara stood on the stage and Yokokawa sat at a table four meters high.

Due to a wrong step, this unfortunate event was created. The bucket of aqueous solution that was poured into the tank contained 16 kg of uranium whereas the tank’s uranium precipitation limit was only 2.4 kg. A large blue flash appeared as a result of the activity.

The impact was immediate. Ouchi received up to 17 sieverts (sv) of radiation, while Shinohara received 10 sv and Yokokawa 3 sv. All three received very large numbers, considering that the maximum threshold for humans to receive radiation is 50 microsieverts in one year. In the book ‘A Slow Death: 83 Days of Radiation Sickness’ it is stated that the radiation received by Ouchi is equivalent to the hypocenter of the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb.

In the aftermath of this tragic incident, Ouchi began to feel sick, nauseous, and had difficulty breathing until he lost consciousness. His friends also immediately received post-radiation treatment.

Poor Ouchi underwent significant body changes, his DNA was destroyed, white blood cells that play a role in the formation of immunity are also close to zero. Burns make the skin peel off, over time it turns black. His hair was bald at the start of treatment.
