The accident happened midway through the match between Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers in the British Hockey League on Saturday night. The game was suspended and the arena’s approximately 8,000 spectators were evacuated while the players formed a ring around Johnson, who received emergency treatment on the ice.
The American was taken by ambulance to hospital where he later died, the club said Xformerly Twitter, on Sunday morning.
“Nottingham Panthers are devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident during the game in Sheffield yesterday,” the club wrote.
Adam Johnson played during the 2020/2021 season for Malmö Redhawks in the SHL. He also has a past in the NHL team Pittsburgh Penguins. Johnson turned 29 years old.
