“Dozens of people were killed” in a fire that broke out, Tuesday-Wednesday night, in a residential building in Hanoi, according to a preliminary toll reported by the official news agency, citing local authorities in the Vietnamese capital.
The official news agency said that following the fire, “about 70 people were rescued, and 54 people were transferred to hospitals,” while the death toll is not yet known.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out shortly before midnight on Tuesday-Wednesday (17:00 GMT).
Video clips broadcast by Vietnamese media showed fire consuming a large part of the ten-story building located in a narrow alley in a residential neighborhood in the capital, Hanoi.
Hua, who lives in the neighborhood, told AFP: “We cannot help them much. There is no emergency. It is impossible for the victims to escape.”
In recent years, Vietnam has witnessed a number of deadly fires, in incidents that raised doubts about the lack of implementation of safety rules in the country.
Last year, a fire in a bar near Ho Chi Minh City (south) killed 32 people.
