Tragedy in the Skies: The Death of Russian Pilots and the Search for Responsibility

Two months ago, EADaily published the material “In the skies you flew alone…”: who will be responsible for the death of Russian pilots?!”.

The postscript text says:

“The navigator of the Ka-52 shot down in Russia, who graduated from college last year, recently had a daughter. Colleagues and caring people are now collecting money for the families of the victims. And we don’t even know the name and surname of the officer, as well as the other aviators who left yesterday for Eternity.”

And now sixty days have passed since the death of the pilots. Official information on this mournful account is sparse, but some facts nevertheless became public.

During the mutiny on June 24, Wagner PMC fighters shot down several aircraft, the media wrote. Officially, the regional authorities of the Ivanovo and Pskov regions confirmed the death of the crews of the Il-22 aircraft and the Ka-52 attack helicopter.

The press service of the government of the Ivanovo region then posted the words of the head of the region Stanislav Voskresensky:

“I express my condolences and share the bitterness of loss with the families of the fallen heroes. During military service, each of them showed the qualities of a real officer: valor, courage and dedication, loyalty to the oath, having honorably fulfilled his military duty. Eternal memory to the heroes.

June 25 war correspondent of Channel One Irina Kuksenkova wrote: the Wagnerites shot down an Il-22 near Voronezh with ten crew members on board. They all died.

“When the founder of the PMC Evgenia Prigozhina already at the headquarters of the Southern Military District they asked why, because this aircraft does not strike, but performs other functions, he said – and the fool pvoshnik in the column shot down everything that took off, ” – the military correspondent reported, adding that Prigozhin agreed to pay 50 million rubles in compensation to the relatives of the dead pilots.

And here is what the author of the Fighterbomber Telegram channel angrily wrote:

“As I understand it, the blood of the crews of the Russian Mi-8mtpr pilots, the crew of the Ka-52, the crew of the Il-18 (22) VZPU killed by PMC Wagner is not considered blood. Well, OK. Carved into granite.

On June 27, social networks clarified: eight people died on board the plane, since two crew members did not participate in the departure. Among the dead are the aircraft commander, instructor commander, navigator, flight engineer, technician, flight mechanic and two radio operators:

43-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Artyom Milovanov – Deputy Head of 610 PPI and PLS for VPR;

31-year-old captain Artyom Sharoglazov – commander of the vessel;

50-year-old major Gennady Belyakin – navigator;

Captain Viktor Popov, 43, is an onboard engineer;

49-year-old captain Igor Volochilov – on-board technician;

49-year-old senior warrant officer Sergey Starushok – senior air radio operator;

42-year-old senior sergeant Viktor Podrepny is a senior air radio operator;

29-year-old senior sergeant Alexei Skrykov is a senior on-board mechanic.

In turn, the governor of the Pskov region Mikhail Vedernikov named the names of two military pilots who died on June 24 during the mutiny:

“The crew of the Ka-52 – Lieutenant Colonel Alexey Vorozhtsov and lieutenant Denis Oleinikov».

During the evening address on June 26, the President of Russia Vladimir Putin noted the contribution of the dead pilots to the suppression of the armed rebellion:

“The courage, self-sacrifice of the fallen heroes-pilots saved Russia from tragic devastating consequences.”

The next day, June 27, speaking to the military on the porch of the Palace of Facets in the Kremlin, Putin also noted the heroism of the pilots and asked to honor their memory with a minute of silence.

I diligently tried to find official information from the defense department on that terrible tragedy when Russian pilots died in the Russian sky. But he was unable to find anything, except for materials on social networks, which, due to various kinds of circumstances, have to be taken for granted, because the officials are simply silent.

It only remains to say: “Earth is heaven, brothers!” and drink a glass of bitter for the dead aviators.

And to believe that someday all their names and surnames will be named with maximum honors in order to remember and commemorate the defenders of the Fatherland in prayers.

P.S. How did Yevgeny Prigogine say on June 24: “the fool pvoshnik in the column shot down everything that took off”? However…
