Frankfurt / Main (dpa / lhe) – Despite the corona pandemic, there are exciting traffic topics in Hesse in the new year. The results of a feasibility study on the planned construction of a long-distance railway tunnel through which long-distance trains could reach Frankfurt Central Station underground are expected in spring. Deutsche Bahn expects the multi-billion dollar project to significantly relieve the junction – and thus a nationwide smoother train traffic. It was examined whether the project is feasible and what costs and effects on rail traffic can be expected. Most recently, the federal government expected more than 3.5 billion euros.
In addition, a referendum on a traffic turnaround law at the state level is in preparation. The collection of signatures could start this year – depending on the pandemic. “Collecting signatures only makes sense outside of a lockdown,” said Heiko Nickel from the regional association of the German Transport Club (VCD). The initiators want to push through the promotion of environmentally and climate-friendly means of transport.
On the other hand, there is a setback in terms of cable cars in or around Frankfurt. The topic was discussed in 2019 in order to relieve the increasingly crowded commuter routes. A feasibility study commissioned by the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) for an airy connection from Oberursel-Hohemark via the Großer Feldberg to Schmitten showed, according to the association, that it would not be economically viable for local public transport .
“The reasons for this are the low volume of traffic and the only limited travel time advantages for public transport,” explained the RMV. According to the experts, however, a cable car from Hohemark to Feldberg would be conceivable as a tourist attraction.
