Traffic Chaos in Occitania Due to Departures from Ascension Bridge

the essential
Departures from the Ascension bridge led to significant slowdowns on the A61 between Toulouse and Narbonne and on the A9 in Nîmes, from Sète to Béziers and in Perthus towards Spain, on the morning of this Thursday May 18, 2023.

As expected, there were many slowdowns, this Thursday morning and again at midday, on the main axes of Occitania due to departures from the Ascension Bridge. Bison Futé classified the day in red in the direction of departures.

On the A61 between Toulouse and Narbonne, this afternoon, traffic was greatly slowed down between Montgiscard and Castelnaudary, an area where work has been underway for many months to widen the motorway towards the Mediterranean, then in the crossing of Carcassonne. The journey time was 2h40 this afternoon instead of 1h10 in normal times! Earlier in the morning, the traffic jams started at the Toulouse Sud toll. The A61 had already experienced significant difficulties on Wednesday evening due to an accident which had extended the normal journey time by one hour between Narbonne and Castelnaudary and another accident after the exit from Carcassonne-est towards the Mediterranean.

On the A9, the traffic was logically difficult in the direction of the south. In Nîmes, traffic was heavily loaded at the A54/A9 junction towards Montpellier. It took 1 hour to travel Sète/Béziers this Thursday noon. Radio Vinci Autoroutes indicated that many motorists left the motorway at Agde but advised against this attitude because the secondary network, which is free, is not adapted to this heavy traffic. Further south, traffic was complicated at the Boulou toll in the Pyrénées-Orientales towards Spain. The 10 km before the border were completely saturated this afternoon.

Another slowdown has been reported since late morning in Montauban at the toll at the A62/A20 junction towards Cahors. This Thursday at the start of the afternoon, the main slowdowns had disappeared, according to Radio Vinci Autoroutes.
