Traditions and Customs of St. Peter’s Day: Honoring the Christian Apostles Saint Paul and Saint Peter

At the end of this month we honor the Christian Apostles Saint Paul and Saint Peter. The holiday dedicated to Saint Peter is on June 29 and is connected to our lifestyle and culture. He was among the most revered of our ancestors. Today, although it is a church holiday in its essence, the holiday is more popular as a name day of those bearing the names Peter, Pavel, Preslav, Preslava, Polina, Petya, Pavlina, Kamen, Kremena and names derived from them.

Paul, Paulina and the derivatives also celebrate the following day, when people celebrate St. Paul’s day non-canonically. Precisely because June 29 is better known as a name day, you probably do not know what the traditions are for the holiday and what must be done on St. Peter’s Day for luck.

On Good Friday, St. is blessed. Peter

Who is Saint Peter?

Before we see what is done on St. Peter’s Day, let’s ask you, do you know who St. Peter is and what the popular beliefs about this apostle are related to? Saint Peter is the guardian of the gates of Paradise, the saint who weighs sins and good deeds and assigns to each soul its place in Heaven or in Hell according to its merits and deeds during life. According to popular belief, he even sent his own mother to Hell because of her sins on earth – he was so fair and unforgiving.

As for the Orthodox calendar St. Peter is noted as the supreme apostle, powerful and personifying the good beginning. It is for this reason that, although Pavel, Pavlina and the derivatives of these names also celebrate their name day on June 29, the holiday is called Petrovden, not Pavlovden.

For St. Paul – the brother of St. Peter, the legend remained in the popular beliefs that he personified the evil beginning, did not allow his day to be worked and was bad and angry, which is why people tried not to anger him by not working in the fields and in the gardens, they did not light fire and stubble, they did not even light the home oven – on that day they did not even bake bread for the table, so that the fires of St. Paul did not reach them.

What is done on St. Peter’s Day – traditions and customs

St. Peter’s Day marks the end of St. Peter’s fast, which began 2 weeks earlier, which is why the hosts prepared chicken dishes for the table – typical and traditional for the holiday. Among the St. Peter’s Day traditions, the following stand out the most:

Carrying apples to church, which, after being consecrated, are given out for health. The custom was connected with the beliefs about Heaven and the Garden of Eden and was especially cherished by parents who had lost their beloved child. Eating early apples, called Petrovki, on St. Peter’s Day is part of the tradition – for luck and health. The Kurban for the holiday, prepared from the youngest Peter’s chicken, was obligatory for every home. The festive dish, prepared from beaten fresh cheese, fried with flour, which was necessarily prepared in the past on St. Peter’s Day and was served on the table together with chicken meat kurbana, pumpkin pies, pies, cakes that the hosts made for the holiday. The cheese dish was called “white man” and also “kutmach” and has no analogue in modern dishes. Traditional for St. Peter’s Day in the past were also the swings that the maidens tied for the holiday, the people and the songs, the folk merriment. The unmarried girls did not sit at the table, but picked herbs – 12 of 12 different meadows, which they hid under their pillow to dream of their future chosen one.

Some of the traditions, rites and customs related to St. Peter’s Day, which our grandfathers taught, have not been preserved to this day and have been forgotten. Others, however, such as the rituals to protect against hail and fires, are still known today and performed in many parts of the country. These ancient rituals are part of the people’s memory, from our roots and are for luck, for health and fortune, for a full house and fields protected from hail, for a well-fed family and healthy children.

Happy holiday!
