Trade Protectionism and the Need for Win-Win Cooperation in the New Energy Vehicle Industry

(Original title: Trade protectionism is not advisable; the development of new energy vehicles requires win-win cooperation)

After a long time of preparation, the European Commission announced on October 4 that it had decided to initiate a countervailing investigation into pure electric passenger vehicles imported from China. This is only 10 days after the conclusion of the 10th China-EU high-level economic and trade dialogue. Relevant Chinese departments and industry organizations issued multiple statements, pointing out that there is no evidence for the EU’s subjective assumptions, which is naked trade protectionism. This move will seriously disrupt and distort the global automotive industry chain and supply chain, including the EU, and have a negative impact on China-EU economic and trade relations.

Many industry experts and insiders also called for not only resolute and strong opposition to acts of obvious trade protectionism, but also thinking about how to formulate response strategies.

After more than ten years of industrial cultivation, China’s new energy vehicle industry chain is not only complete and mature, but also has global leading advantages in “three power” technologies. At present, China’s new energy vehicle industry has fully emerged. Not only has the export of complete vehicles surged, but supporting parts and components companies have also gone overseas and built factories in Europe and other places. China’s automobile exports have entered a new stage of development.

There is no doubt that when the products of Chinese car companies sell well around the world, they will inevitably conflict with the interests of traditional car manufacturing and exporting countries. Trade protection measures similar to the EU’s countervailing investigations will still occur from time to time, and the Chinese automobile industry must be mentally prepared for the long term.

Specific to response measures, relevant departments must take multiple measures to properly handle trade disputes, give full play to the respective roles of the government, industry organizations and enterprises, and try their best to reduce trade frictions. At the same time, for auto companies that take the initiative to go overseas, the government and industry organizations can also provide relevant guidance to prevent overseas companies from being frustrated by trade protection.

Since the reform and opening up, the internationalization of Chinese enterprises and the global development of brands have been very difficult. Industries such as home appliances, photovoltaics, and smartphones have all faced attacks and pressure from overseas. But in fact, as long as their own technology is excellent, , the above-mentioned tests will always fail themselves. The same is true for China’s new energy automobile industry. In addition to rationally responding to pressure from various overseas forces, the core is to improve its own technical strength, gradually shift from product export to technology export, and enhance its voice in the global new energy vehicle industry chain.

The new energy vehicle industry chain is far-reaching. Not only is the chain long, but it also has a wide radiation range. Only through extensive cooperation can all parties develop and grow. Currently, both China and Europe are very firm on the path of green, low-carbon and sustainable development. In the automotive industry, the two sides have interacted many times and have a solid foundation for industrial cooperation.

As the saying goes, “Working alone goes fast, working together goes far.” The new energy automobile industry works together to achieve win-win results. Strengthening cooperation between China and Europe in the field of new energy vehicles will also help both parties face global competition. If the EU continues to ignore the facts and insists on launching a countervailing investigation, it will not only affect the EU’s local car companies, but also cast a shadow on the development of the global new energy vehicle industry.
