Trabusch decision is a defeat for the OB

Würzburg’s OB Schuchardt was unable to assert himself in the debate about theater director Markus Trabusch in Main – probably because he underestimated the city council.

Because of the corona pandemic, the Würzburg Mainfranken Theater has ceased to play this season, but the internal drama about the directorate continued. There was no shortage of actors and spectators, and one main character – Artistic Director Markus Trabusch – became two over the course of the conflict. Because Würzburg’s Mayor Christian Schuchardt also played a major role. Although Markus Trabusch does not leave the stage without injuries in this piece, the vote of the city council majority for a new contract is a personal defeat for the OB.

Christian Schuchardt had clearly defined himself in the debate about the criticism of the manager’s management style and wanted to end the collaboration on bending and breaking. He had apparently underestimated the resistance in the city council. It so happens that Schuchardt finds himself only a few weeks after his brilliant re-election in the first serious crisis of his term, including loss of authority. “That can’t be done with me,” he had said with a view to a contract for the director. Now you did it – and with a clear majority.

This last decision by the old city council is a pointer to what might be the normality in the town hall in the future. The mayor is likely to face a more confident city council – he should take that into account.
