Toys take over: ‘I don’t feel at home in my own house’

There are toys all over the room. “It looks like a play paradise”, says Florian. Viktor notes that he has no children of his own, but that he thinks the room smells like diapers and wipes. He picks up a pee jar from the floor. “Sometimes I have a bit of a relationship with people with children: they find things like this very normal.”

Not at home in your own house

After the initial inspection, the family comes in to tell them what else they want. Jennifer says that more and more toys have been added and that she doesn’t have time to sort them out. “It’s so much now that I don’t know where to start,” she sighs. “You never have peace in your own house, because it is chaotic everywhere, so I don’t feel at home in my own house.”

Ricardo is also not happy with the situation. When he comes home after work, he feels like he can go clean it up again. “It makes sense, because she doesn’t have much time early in the morning either, but it does irritate you.” It causes mutual annoyance.

Toys and clothes

All belongings are removed from the house and displayed in a large shed on the ground. When the family enters, they notice that there are a lot of clothes and toys. There are, among other things, 801 shirts and cardigans for the children, 179 children’s books and 39 horse blankets. “That this really all fits in our house,” Jennifer says as she walks through the rows of stuff.

Organizer Eefje helps with selecting the children’s clothing. “I don’t even know where to start anymore, because it really is a lot,” she says. “It’s not the first time for me in the warehouse, nor the first time with children’s clothing, but we really haven’t experienced this yet.” They start by donating all clothing under size 80.

The team has completely redecorated the house. Jaylinn, 5, now has her own room and the two boys sleep in another room. By selling some stuff, they were able to buy a new sofa for the living room. Jennifer is happy about it. “Now you can be proud of your home again, instead of being ashamed of it.”
