“Toyota Partners with VDL Groep to Test Hydrogen-Powered Fuel Cell Trucks”

The Japanese car company is joining forces with VDL Groep of the Netherlands to study the everyday operation of hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks.

In order to realize this intention, one truck converted to run on hydrogen fuel will be traveling on Toyota’s logistics routes already this summer, while several more fuel cell trucks will join the test program in autumn as the project gains momentum.

The authors of the project emphasize that unlike the batteries of fully electric vehicles, hydrogen systems in fuel cell trucks have a relatively low mass, which means that they still offer a large payload capacity. At the same time, such trucks can be refueled almost as quickly as with diesel fuel – this reduces downtime and improves operational efficiency.

As part of the Toyota and VDL Groep project, the fuel cell trucks are known to use technology borrowed from the Toyota Mirai.
