Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — 5 billion people in the world lack protection from trans fats, according to a statement published on the official website of the World Health Organization “WHO”.

Industrially produced trans fats are widely used in packaged foods, baked goods, and cooking oils, and are responsible for 500,000 premature deaths worldwide each year from coronary heart disease.

A tweet by the Omani Ministry of Health on Twitter addressed the use of these fats by restaurants to reduce costs and increase the shelf life of food.

Trans fats raise cholesterol and increase the risk of stroke and diabetes.

Trans fats are commonly found in these products:

  • Margarine, vegetable shortening, and hydrogenated oils
  • donut
  • fried potato
  • crackers
  • Fast food
  • Coffee cream
  • Processed biscuits and cakes

And the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, had previously said in a statement: “Trans fats do not know any benefits, while they carry serious health risks that burden health systems,” adding: “On the other hand, eliminating trans fats is effective.” “Cost-wise, there are significant health benefits. In simple terms, trans fats are a deadly toxic chemical that should not be used in food. It’s time to get rid of them completely.”
