Toxic Fire at Chemical Warehouses in Hamburg Sends Smoke Cloud Toward City Center

Warehouses with chemicals are on fire in Hamburg, Germany. A toxic cloud is heading towards the city center.

On Sunday night, a major fire broke out in two warehouses in the Rotenburgsort district of Hamburg. Firefighters warned residents of the danger from toxic smoke. According to TASS with reference to the DPA, due to the wind, a cloud of smoke is moving towards the city center.

“The center of Hamburg is completely smoky”, a fire service spokesman said. Residents of Hamburg were advised to keep windows and doors closed and protected from smoke. At the same time, firefighters were unable to report the cause of the fire and what was burning.

According to the NDR radio station, the fire started in a parking lot, firefighters are working in respirators, and the danger itself may be associated with hydrogen sulfide. Deutsche Bahn has already stopped rail traffic between Hamburg and Büchen.
