They are witnesses to the past of cities. Among the thousands of graves in the cemeteries of Seine-Saint-Denis, some are the last home of artists, sportsmen or even politicians who have forged the history of France.
Artists, politicians, resistance fighters …
In Saint-Denis, it is impossible to escape the communist history of the city. In the middle of the tens of thousands of tombs is that of Pierre Degeyter, adorned with sickle and hammer. The composer of the International rests alongside by Auguste Delaune, resistant and member of the Communist Party.
In Saint-Ouen, the extra-muros Parisian cemetery is the burial place of dozens of personalities. On the graves, the walker will be able to find the name of the writer Alphonse Allais, the actress of the 30s Mireille Balin, the actor in 200 films Jean Tissier or the painter Suzanne Valadon.
Further east, the cemetery of Pantin houses the last rest of a branch of the Brothers, famous Italian circus family. A family that gave its name to the Académie Fratellini, the higher school of circus arts located in Saint-Denis.
Next to the Fratellini is Alphonse Halimi, world boxing champion in 1957. Helno, singer member of the Green Negresses and died of an overdose of heroin at the age of 29 years also rests in the cemetery of Pantin.
Further north, the Muslim cemetery of Bobigny is home to princes and princesses and also Ahmed Boughéra El Ouafi, gold medalist at the 1928 Olympic Games marathon, tragically died at the age of 61. Denise Albert has been buried in the Sevran cemetery since 2016. Sevran figure of the French Resistance during the Second World War, she was a liaison officer during the Second World War.
A history tour that would not be complete without the Basilica of Saint-Denis and its royal necropolis, the last home of the kings of France.
