–
9 on the run: there are Mozzato and Boaro. Pogacar on the ground
Manuele Boaro’s first escape attempt neutralized. After a few km the Astana rider tries again and enters the day’s action with Luca Mozzato (B / B Hotels), Grignard (Lotto Soudal), van der Hoorn (Intermarché Wanty Gobert), Dewulf (AG2R Citroën), Bohli ( Cofidis), Kanter (Movistar), Paasschens (Bingoal Pauwels Sauces) and De Vylder (Vlaanderen-Baloise). Watch out for crashes and the first to pay the price is Tadej Pogacar who collides with Campbell Stewart in the corners. The 9 fugitives always maintain a 4-minute lead over the group, but after the Valkenberg everything changes.
Pogacar inattention! The Slovenian immediately ends up on the ground
Attacks Bettiol, but Trentin and Pogacar make everyone come back
After the 8th wall of the day, here is a shot from Iván García Cortina that splits the group in two. Runners like Mads Pedersen, Lampaert, Stybar and our Alberto Bettiol also join the action of the Spaniard. Action that forces the men of the UAE Emirates to forcing to recover, and again watch out for falls: two favorites like Laporte and Turgis pay the price.
The big boys fall! Turgis and Laporte straight into the ditch at -80km
The group of pursuers even manages to give 1 ‘to the Pogacar group, but all the teams behind manage to recover. On the second pass of the Kwaremont, Pogacar gets into action and everyone comes back: the Slovenian recovers from the counterattackers and also cancels the escape. However, van der Poel, Pidcock and Laporte also managed to return to his Asgreen wheel before Paterberg. Here comes the flare-ups of Tratnik and van der Poel, everyone responds except Asgreen who loses his wheels.
Koppenberg dream! Pogacar and van der Poel make the difference
Pogacar does not detach van der Poel: then he wins the VDP in the sprint
It’s up to Koppenberg and here is a new attack from Pogacar, followed by van der Poel and Madouas. In front there are still 5, there are also Fred Wright and Dylan van Baarle who had slightly advantage in the previous km. Everyone else is beaten, including Pidcock and Asgreen. On the third passage on the Oude Kwaremont, only van der Poel and Pogacar remain in the lead, renewing the challenge on the Paterberg. On the last bump of the day, VDP seems to be struggling, but the Dutchman remains glued to the Slovenian’s wheel.
Pogacar sprints, van der Poel resists on the Paterberg: the decisive moment
Nothing, everything is decided in the sprint. The two continue on their way, but look at each other a little too much and in the end even van Baarle and Madouas get back together. Van der Poel starts dry, while Pogacar is blocked by the two riders who have returned and so it is child’s play for VDP who does an encore after the success of 2020. van Baarle 2nd, Madouas 3rd, Pogacar even last in this squad. What a joke!
