In the great traveling circus that is the Tour de France, the public very often only knows a small minority of faces. The riders of course, the bosses of the event or of a few teams, and a handful of journalists and TV consultants, that is a few dozen people. Very little compared to the 4,500 who actually make the Grande Boucle live every day.
