Thirty-six-year-old Cavendish made his way in the mass range in Valencia and managed the 190.7 km long track in 4:14:07 h. Belgian Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) finished second and his compatriot Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix) finished third. Slovenian Tadej Pogačar from the UAE-Team Emirates stable kept the yellow jersey for the overall leader. He has a 2:01 minute lead over second Australian Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroën).
Cavendish scored another 50 points in the competition for the green jersey and he already has 218 in his account. The second Michael Matthews from Australia (BikeExchange) is losing 59 points to him, Sagan is seventh (92 points).
The first day off was followed by a flat stage with the only climbing premium of the 4th category. The fastest sprinters were supposed to fight for the triumph again, but the situation before the technical finish in Valencia could be complicated by the announced crosswind at the final tens of kilometers. Sagan won the spurt in Valencia in 2018, but the finish was then slightly uphill.

Shortly after the start, only the pair of Hugo Houle (Astana Premier Tech) and Tosh van der Sande (Lotto Soudal) got into the escape, which was especially suitable for teams with strong sprinters, as they had little work to control the race. After 30 km, the pair gained a lead of over six minutes, but it did not grow further. The experienced Tim Declercq from Deceuninck-QuickStep moved to the front of the package and kept pace so that no one else would escape. The first Houle came out on the only scored hill Col de Couz, more excitement was brought about by the subsequent speed bonus. Van der Sande took twenty points, Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Victorious) won the package spurt for 17 points, Sagan won ten for 6th place, Cavendish surprisingly did not score.
The pace in the peloton did not decrease and so the lead of the pair at the head dropped to two minutes already 75 km before the finish. Shortly afterwards, the Ineos riders ended up on the ground. Richie Porte had to change his bike and suffered a few scars, but he continued. Forty kilometers before the finish, only Houle remained in front and he wrapped it up a few kilometers away. The crosswinds really picked up on the open roads, and there was a threat of rain, which QuickStep racers tried to use. World champion Julian Alaphilippe set a high pace, Colbrelli was unlucky, who just got a defect and had to wait for the bike to be replaced. QuickStep continued to press, and larger gaps formed ten kilometers before the target. However, Sagan and most of the favorites for the stage and the overall standings remained in the front group. The entire DSM team with sprinter Cees Ball had to catch up, but he managed to “stick” back.

In the end, QuickStep showed its enormous power in mass commutes. He came to the top of the package at the head of the package with four competitors, Cavendisha was brought to the plateau about 150 meters before the belt and the thirty-six-year-old sprinter did not lose his first position. Sagan lost a mile in front of the Cavendish rear wheel, managed to get back in good position, but then had a minor collision and did not fight for the podium.
“It was like the old days, as you can read in cycling magazines, a sample” train “,” looking forward to the goal of laughing Cavendish. “We were at the head of the guys who went as fast as possible so that no one would try to overtake us. We knew this finish, the last time I didn’t get into it.
It was in 2015, I fell behind, I cried slowly and Greipel won. We studied it, we knew that if we went wide in the last turn, we would keep our speed. I’m honored that everyone helped me again and I had to finish it. Basically, however, I didn’t have to do anything, just spurt 150 meters. I have to thank the team, “ he was quoted by the Cycling News portal.
Another very demanding exam is on the program on Wednesday. The 198.9 km long route from Sorgues to the town of Malaucne awaits the racers, during which they have to conquer the legendary Mont Ventoux twice. First from the “milder” side of Sault (22.1 km, 5.0%) and then from the steeper (15.7 km, 8.7%). Together they are waiting for a peloton of 4700 meters.
