TOULON: COVID-19, The journal of a confined person, by Jérôme NAVARRO

The former elected representative of the city of Toulon tells about PRESSE AGENCE, his confinement since March 16.

Let’s follow his confined experience day by day!

When I had just held and chaired “in a very special atmosphere”, the polling station 99 of the Aiguillon nursery school in Toulon, as part of the municipal elections of March 15, I felt that we were in the process of switch to a particular and dark page in the history of our country.

This presidency, I must tell you honestly that I assumed it out of moral and civic duty as an elected official but also for my faithful assessors who have been following me for almost 20 years, despite the legitimate fears of my wife and fear of taking risks for my loved ones. It is however to honor the city of Toulon and its staff who had put in place distancing measures and sanitary equipment in sufficient quantity.

A NEW PAGE

While the schools were already closed on Friday, March 13 and the Prime Minister instituted the closing the day before the evening of the 1st round the closing of all places receiving the public, I anticipated the same evening, by arriving late at home, a possible confinement !
The next day, as such, I was in contact with the company Inter-Faces (my professional employer for which I work as a project manager for furnishing), who informed me not to open its stores and close its offices in Toulon and Puget-sur-Argens, from this day.

In the aftermath of the presidential intervention, and the confirmation of the confinement, I was placed on short-time work with a very reduced activity of teleworking at home. A new page was indeed starting …
Like millions of French people, from the evening of March 15 until May 11, the day of resumption “under conditions”, that is for 56 days, I was thus able to apprehend the cessation of my usual activity and the extreme limitation of my displacements.
For my part, these rules I accepted, validated and understood immediately.
It was now necessary to relearn how to live differently and why not use these moments to rethink.
I measured the chance that I had first of all to be equipped with a computer and internet access, a printer scanner, in order to work (process my professional emails, quotes, order management , etc.) but also and above all to provide school lessons for my children with my wife.

INCARNATION OF DOUBT

By spending almost 5 hours a day there, we were able to realize how a day of class was complete and tedious to assume. I would like to thank the professors who are invested and attentive, thank you to the entire team of Notre-Dame-des-Missions.
As regards the Inter-Faces company again (16 employees from Toulon and the Var) and in order to limit as much as possible the inevitable fall in its turnover, it has set up special “containment” offers in order to give all its customers the benefit of very advantageous prices on all the furniture in stock and which can be recovered at the end of confinement.
Finally, the activity of my elected mandate being stopped due to confinement but also depending on the result of the elections, I still had a lot of time to occupy for these 56 days… A real new life to organize for confinement but also for the after!
I love reading, especially philosophical and esoteric, I could give myself up to this passion, nothing better than to take advantage of these particular times in order to take a step back from events but also from myself, from doubts.

Yes in 2020 in a society so modern, so technological, so efficient, the Covid is indeed the embodiment of doubt, of which no scientist really knows what will happen to it, what will happen to us, or even contradict each other since the beginning of the pandemic … However, life itself is doubt, any discovery of humanity is part of a questioning! we had all forgotten it, far too lost in our certainties …
Like the great thinkers, it seems to me essential to know how to appreciate more than ever the true value of things, the chance to be alive, to be in good health, to breathe, to live free in a beautiful country … with dear ones we love! All this is precarious because yes we are mortal, beings doomed to finitude. Every day is a victory over existence and man must think about the day when he will leave this earth and the reason for this beautiful journey.

As such, I would like to take advantage of the word given to me to have a strong and sincere thought for all those who have lost someone in their family, a loved one.
Like this daily evening meeting at 8 p.m., which has become essential for our children as for us, a moment of communion for men and women belonging to the same nation, our France, which allowed us to celebrate the real heroes of everyday life, our caregivers who saved lives, but also all those who continued to work so that we can live confined.

LEARN TO LIVE

I think I am fortunate to have been able to take advantage of these moments in a position of enforced interiority (I hope others have been able to do so), to meditate and measure the essential of what makes our world, I who had been too busy before, living at a speed in this noisy world where people speak too quickly, too loud, and where passions are sometimes devastating. On this subject, social networks have once again shown what is best and worst in human beings.
“Cultivating your garden”, my little outside of Loubière was a breath of fresh air, with a very sunny month of April I also measured the chance to be able to spend time gardening, tinkering, as well as moments of romp and sports activities with my children. I imagine the extreme difficulty of large families trapped in an apartment without access to the outside.

Yes, we will have to relearn how to live after the confinement of May 11 and even beyond. It may even be for some more difficult than confinement, living with this “poison” which is there invisible but devastating enemy (hoping one day that researchers around the world will find a vaccine), for this we need more than ever cultivate our cardinal virtues, in particular knowing how to be careful, tempering, exercising probity, accepting rules, and more particularly in relation to this virus, distancing for a double purpose to be preserved but also the other our similar, even the most weak, respect the prescriptions of a strict sanitary hygiene, and the wearing of the mask which must be compulsory everywhere in my opinion…
In short if it was perhaps a chance for our nation and all its citizens to have a much more collective conscience than usual! Like a sports team, you only win if you are together and push in the same direction, to have a real extra soul.
