Tough criticism for Kristine Frøseth’s Dunham film – VG

FASHION: Kristine Frøseth at the Met Gala in New York in September 2021.

Kristine Frøseth (26) has the main role in Lena Dunham’s new film about female sexuality. It gets criticized for unreliable sex portrayal. “A misjudged experiment,” writes the Guardian.

Norwegian Kristine Frøseth grew up in New Jersey in New York before the family moved to Drøbak when she was six. In her youth, the family moved back and forth between Norway and the USA, and in recent years she has been seen in a number of films and series.

This weekend, “Sharp Stick” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was reviewed by several international media.

NEW FILM: Kristine Frøseth and Jon Bernthal in «Sharp Stick» from Lena Dunham.

The film is Lena Dunham’s first since her debut “Tiny Furniture” in 2010. In the meantime, she has of course made six seasons with “Girls” and been involved in several other projects.

Frøseth plays the main role as Sarah Jo. She is a naive 26-year-old who had to have her uterus removed in her teens, and after that has stood still sexually.

MCDREAMY: Kristine Frøseth spilte mot Patrick Dempsey i «The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair».

She works as a nanny for a boy with Down syndrome and eventually asks the married father in the house (Jon Bernthal) to initiate her into the world of sexuality. Eventually she gets blood on her teeth and sets up a “wish list” of sexual activities.

British Guardian gives the film two out of five stars and writes that Dunham’s comeback is “a misjudged experiment” and that the film is “awkward, misjudged and at times sexy”.

Frøseth about the sex scenes in his previous film:

Both the Guardian, The New York Post and Collider note that it is unbelievable that Sarah Jo is so sexually ignorant when she has grown up with the internet and with a mother and sister who are very open sexually.

Deadline is more positive and calls it “A refreshing film about a beautiful woman who in her mid-20s manages to stop stifling sex and throws herself into it.”.

Variety believes the film is Dunham’s first disappointment. Entertainment Weekly calls it “tone deaf” and gives it the grade C-.

Collider writes that the film is «chaotic», but praises Frøseth: «Frøseth is quite good in a role that requires her to be innocent, but curious to learn more about her own sexuality. And even though Dunham does not give Sarah Jo any particular evenness, Frøseth’s efforts make us wish her all the best. “

RED RUNNER: Kristine Frøseth at the premiere of “Sierra Burgess is a Loser” in August 2018.

The New York Post rather towards slaughter, and calls the film both “gruesome” and “the worst in his career” (for Dunham).

“Sharp Stick is meant to be a very funny story about growing up, but we rarely laugh because we do not believe in the story for a nanosecond.” writes the reviewer.

Frøseth started his career as a model, and has gone for well-known brands such as Prada, Victoria’s Secret and Chloé. It was through the modeling agency that she got her first acting audition «Looking for Alaska».
