Tottenham Hotspur: Can Ange Postecoglou Take Spurs Forward?

Tottenham Hotspur had a miserable 2022-23 English Premier League season, finishing down in eighth position. A summer of transition is set to unfold at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and new boss Ange Postecoglou has a lot of work to do before the 2023-24 season kicks off.

Can Tottenham Challenge for the EPL Title?

Manchester City is the red-hot favorite to win the Premier League title next term, but can Tottenham put themselves in the championship race? In the betting online, the London club is priced at +4000 to lift the trophy. This makes them the seventh favorite so the bookmakers are clearly getting expecting little from them, but a $5 bet on them would return $200 according to an odds converter, which may tempt a few fans, especially considering the job Postecoglou managed at Celtic.

Man City is odds-on to retain the title. Chelsea and Liverpool are expected to strike back after poor seasons, while the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle United, and Manchester United have been tipped to do well next season. The title may be a step too far next term, but the top four (+300) for Spurs is a real possibility.

Will Postecoglou Hit the Ground Running?

Postecoglou heads to Tottenham off the back of a stunning season with Celtic in Scotland. The Bhoys won yet another domestic treble, picking up the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup, and the League Cup. As Celtic looks for a new manager, Postecoglou has left the club in great shape.

The Celts were the top dogs in the Premiership last term, beating fierce rivals Rangers to the title by seven points. The Glasgow giant picked up 32 wins from 38 league games and scored a staggering 114 goals to boot. Of course, the step up to the English Premier League is a huge one. England’s top division is one of the toughest leagues in the world, especially at the top of the table.

Spurs had a 2022-23 season to forget. They made a solid enough start under Antonio Conte, but things went downhill before the 2022 FIFA World Cup break, as the Lilywhites lost three of five before signing off.

They struggled to find form on their return too, suffering disappointing defeats to Arsenal, Man City, and Leicester City in January and February. Despite Spurs’ form picking up, a 3-3 draw at Southampton in March proved to be Conte’s final game in charge of the London club. He was sacked after a big rant at his players.

Tottenham’s season fizzled out, and they even missed out on a European spot. Spurs ended in eighth, winning 18, losing 14, and drawing six of their 38 league games.

Daniel Levy has changed manager four times in four years, but the Londoners are looking for some stability under Postecoglou. He will need time to stamp his authority in the English capital.

Many Old Firm managers have been given a chance to showcase their talents in England’s top division, but not many have succeeded. However, Postecoglou could be the safe pair of hands that Tottenham needs right now.

First and foremost, having finished in eighth and missed out on Europe, bringing European soccer back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is the priority for the Athens-born boss. It will be tough, but can Postecoglou push Spurs forward?
