Toto Cutugno, Former Eurovision Winner, Passes Away at 80

Former Eurovision winner Toto Cutugno has passed away. The Italian singer-songwriter died Tuesday afternoon at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. Cutugno turned 80 years old.

His manager Danilo Mancuso told ANSA that the singer “had gotten worse in recent months after a long illness.” Further details about the singer’s illness were not shared.

Cutugno won the 1990 Eurovision Song Contest in Zagreb with the song Insieme: 1992. It was the second time that Italy won the Eurovision song contest and the last time for Måneskin to do so again in 2021. Insieme: 1992 became a modest hit in Europe. In the Netherlands, the song did not get further than 15th place. In Belgium, the song reached the 8th position in the hit list.

Born in Fosdinovo, Cutugno is one of Italy’s most successful artists with more than 100 million albums sold.
