A Convenient Alliance

Top congressional Democrats announced on Tuesday their support for embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, in the face of growing Republican opposition.

The Democrats, in a statement, pledged to come to Johnson’s aid if Republicans attempted to remove him from his position. This unprecedented backing follows Johnson’s controversial move to push $61 billion in military aid for Ukraine, even going against some conservatives in his own party.

The House Democratic leadership team boldly stated, “The time has come to turn the page on this chapter of Pro-Putin Republican obstruction,” implicitly attributing support for Ukraine to being anti-Putin and accusing Republicans who opposed the aid of aiding the Russian president.

A devout evangelical and Louisiana conservative, Johnson now finds himself effectively leading a coalition government in the House, a situation that Democratic detractors might find hard to swallow. Yet, the alliance with Johnson extends beyond Ukraine to areas such as government operational funding and controversial national security surveillance programs, where the speaker found himself aligned with Democratic objectives.

Republican Unease, Trump’s Unexpected Support

Not everyone within Johnson’s party is happy with the speaker’s leadership. Congressional conservatives, particularly Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, had been pushing for Johnson’s removal since before the Ukraine aid debate. Greene warned that she would bring a motion to remove him, aiming to showcase the differences between establishment Republicans and Democrats, commonly referred to as the “Uniparty.”

However, rank-and-file House Republicans, still reeling from the previous removal of Speaker Kevin McCarthy, seem apprehensive about another internal battle. Johnson’s ascension to the post involved three weeks of heated debate within the party. In a twist of events, the embattled speaker found support from an unexpected ally: former President Donald Trump.

Trump, the presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee, praised Johnson, categorizing him as a “good person” who is doing his best despite the narrow Republican majority in the chamber. With the backing of both Democrats and Trump, Johnson’s hold on power seems secure at least until the November election for the 435 House seats.

However, in the event that Republicans maintain control of the chamber, Johnson’s position might become precarious without the support of the Democrats, once more exposing the fault lines among conservatives.

Remaining Focused

For the time being, Johnson remains focused on attending to his responsibilities.

Speaking to reporters at the Capitol on Tuesday, Johnson emphasized the need to do what he believes to be right and stressed the importance of a functioning Congress, saying, “What the country needs right now is a functioning Congress.”
