Top 2000 almost started again, Top 2000 Café packed with TV screens

The Top 2000 will start tonight at NPO Radio 2. Radio DJ Jeroen van Inkel kicks off the hit list at 00.00 with the last song in the list: Promises Of No Man’s Land van Blaudzun, a Dutch artist. The ‘list of lists’ can traditionally be heard at the station up to and including old and new.

Finally the number is Bohemian Rhapsody Queen’s turn. That song was knocked off the top position last year by Roller Coaster by Danny Vera, but now heads the list for the eighteenth time. Roller Coaster is number 2 on the list this year, followed by A Whiter Shade Of Pale by Procol Harum. That was one of the favorite songs of the shot crime journalist Peter R. de Vries and was played on almost all Dutch radio stations during the funeral. Last year the song was still in place 153 in the list.

Another notable riser is the number Radar Love by Golden Earring, which now enters from 33rd place at number 6. The rock band from The Hague, which announced earlier this year to stop due to George Kooymans’ illness, has never been in the top 10 with a song before. Nothing Else Matters Metallica is new in the top 10. The song rises from place 17 to 8. Furthermore, the top 10 consists of Hotel California of Eagles (4th place), Piano Man by Billy Joel (place 5), Stairway To Heaven from Led Zeppelin (place 7), Black of Pearl Jam (9th place) and Evening by Boudewijn de Groot (place 10).

Songs

What is striking about the list is that the French song is a lot more popular. This is probably due to the success of the TV program Songs! by Matthijs van Nieuwkerk and Rob Kemps. Not only does the number of chansons increase from ten to fourteen, but all well-known songs also climb in the list.

Most of the songs in the Top 2000 are from Queen, who has 35 songs in it. Then follow The Beatles with 31 songs and ABBA, Bruce Springsteen, U2 and The Rolling Stones with 23 songs. This year there are 346 Dutch songs in the Top 2000. The highest ranked songs from Dutch soil this year are Roller Coaster by Danny Vera (number 2), Radar Love from Golden Earring (number 6), Evening by Boudewijn de Groot (number 10) and Soldier On by Di-Rect (number 14).

Due to the corona measures, the Top 2000 Café in the Institute for Sound and Vision in Hilversum will not be filled with an audience this year, but with television screens. In previous years, people often queued for a long time to visit the cafe.
