The 36-year-old took responsibility

Real Madrid had control from the first second. Athletic Bilbao had enough of hanging on to the white-clad, and had challenges finding good offensive solutions.

18 minutes in, captain Karim Benzema tested the shooting foot – which became the La Liga league leaders’ first usable shot in the final. He also headed the ball into the crossbar a few minutes before. But it did not hold up.

So, ten minutes before the break, Real Madrid took the lead deservedly. Rodrygo Goes rolled over nicely from the right edge, and teammate Luka Modric came from deep. The former then put the ball nicely into the 36-year-old, who braced the ball to the left of the goalkeeper. It was Modric’s first goal of the season, and one was 0-1 at the break.

Hands and penalty rescue

Five minutes into the second half, Real Madrid were awarded a penalty kick, after Athletic Bilbaou defender Yeray Alvarez blocked Benzema’s shot with his arm. It was also the captain who had the pleasure of putting the penalty in goal.

There was so much drama in the last regular minutes of the game when Athletic were penalized after a hand by Real Madrid’s Eder Militao – who then received a red card.

Athelitc Bilbao was given a chance to change things around. But that was not the case as Athletics’ Raul Garcia’s penalty shot was spectacularly saved by Thibaut Courtois.

The final ended 2-0 for Real Madrid.
