Tom Dumoulin made his comeback in the peloton this season after a long period of injuries. “The sports staff and I thought it was better to get off the bike”, Dumoulin says on the Jumbo-Visma website. “I was already tired at the start of the Vuelta and that feeling did not immediately improve. It made no sense to continue, because that might have consequences next season. It may not be ideal to leave the Vuelta, but I think this is the right decision. We are doing well with Primoz Roglic, so I hope that the team can bring home the victory. ”

“Good preparation”
“It is a pity that Tom is going home,” says sports director Merijn Zeeman. “We’ve been monitoring his fatigue every day and it only got worse. Still, he continued to do a good job for the team. His presence in this Vuelta was short, but we think it could have been a good preparation for 2021. ”
Golas and Elissonde are also getting off course
In addition to Tom Dumoulin, Pole Michal Golas (Ineos Grenadiers) and Frenchman Kenny Elissonde (Trek-Segafredo) also did not start the eighth stage in the Tour of Spain on Wednesday.
The 36-year-old Golas returns home due to family circumstances. Elissonde has contracted gastroenteritis.
