Toll Cards Will Be Completely ‘Destroyed’ in 2024

Jakarta

The government will implement touchless toll transactions or multi lane free flow (MLFF). The system will be implemented in stages starting this year and fully implemented in 2024. The bottom line is that later cars pay tolls without a card.

“The end of 2023, effective 2024,” said Head of the Toll Road Regulatory Agency (BPJT) Danang Parikesit when confirmed yesterday, quoted Saturday (21/5/2022).

He added that for this year, it will be applied commercially and gradually. “The 2022 trial, starting with phased commercial implementation (COD) at the end of 2022, is subject to readiness,” said Danang.

In a written statement, Danang also explained that with the application of contactless transaction technology, motorists as toll road users no longer need to stop at toll gates, let alone queue for tapping electronic money cards when making payments.

Because, apart from using MLFF, the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) system is also equipped, with this system it is possible to make transactions through an application on a smartphone and read via satellite.

In addition, the devices that are planned to be used in MLFF’s contactless transactions are the Electronic On-Board Unit or known as E-OBU, and the Electronic Route Ticket device. With the device, users can select entry and exit points according to single-use travel routes.

Through the application of MLFF contactless transactions, of course, it has enormous benefits because it can eliminate queue times to zero (0) seconds. Previously, the use of electronic money (e-Toll) had also reduced the transaction time to a maximum of 5 seconds.

“Other benefits are operating cost efficiency and also minimizing vehicle fuel. Apart from making it easier for road users to pay tolls without obstacles, it is informative, safe, comfortable and sustainable and can also increase toll revenue efficiency, as well as reduce congestion levels during peak hours,” he explained.

Danang emphasized that the implementation of cardless toll payments will be phased in by the end of this year and carried out on several toll roads, where toll cards can still be used.

“For the initial stage of implementation, it begins with a transition period on several toll roads, where some of the substations at each toll gate can still use electronic toll cards,” said Danang in a press statement.

Danang explained that the toll road sections that the system will implement at the end of the year are still under discussion.
