‘Today Bilbao’ in the Oma Forest | Radio Bilbao | Hoy por Hoy Bilbao

The Forest of Oma dies. The ‘brown band’ fungus is destroying 80% of the nearly 500 pine trees that make it up. Before one of the most beautiful and artistic places in the territory is lost, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, together with a committee of experts led by the artist’s son, José Ibarrola, presented a few days ago a plan to replicate the paintings in another enclave still to decide. In ‘Hoy por hoy Bilbao’ we have gone to Kortezubi. Juan Carlos Otaola, SER microphone in hand, has witnessed the state of the site and has been accompanied by José Ibarrola, who has related the project of reproducing the work that his father, Augustine, immortalized.

Biscayan artist Agustín Ibarrola created ana of his most emblematic works as an ephemeral art project, being the trees of the forest, a living element of the life cycle, an important element for the work. It is a representative sample of the current Land art contemporary art. “I try to establish a relationship between contemporary culture and the millennial culture of my people, which is where my roots are,” says Ibarrola himself of his work.

Currently, the forest maintains close to 500 painted trees corresponding to 61 artistic ensembles. The main objective of the regional project is to give continuity to a cultural proposal that has been consolidated in the region and which, today, represents a relevant resource for all of Bizkaia. The new forest will preserve all the essence of Ibarrola and will maintain, as it happens now, emotional connectivity with visitors.
